Angela has been an educator for 30 years and an OG tutor since 2016. She is passionate about educating fellow parents and teachers about dyslexia and helping students with dyslexia learn to read because of her experience homeschooling her own dyslexic learner.
Dyslexic learners may have difficulty understanding or remembering visual and auditory information. Therefore, students with dyslexia often struggle with establishing a connection between the name and shape of letters and their respective sounds—an essential ability to become a fluent reader.
The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach was specifically designed to help students who are struggling with reading to build new neural pathways in the areas of the brain responsible for understanding and storing language. The OG approach uses multisensory learning activities to strengthen letter-sound associations and improve reading, spelling, and understanding of spoken information.
Online tutoring offers a number of advantages. It is flexible (location is not a hinderance as long as there's internet access), it is convenient (students can be at home, their grandparents house, or even in the car), and travel time and travel expenses are eliminated with the online platform. Students receive a box of fun and engaging supplies to be used in tutoring sessions.
